Trading USDT P2P Safely in Vietnam – Scams, Account Security and Frozen Accounts
Legal notice: since 1 September 2026, under Decree 284/2026/ND-CP, individuals in Vietnam who trade crypto-assets other than through a provider licensed by the Ministry of Finance can be fined 30–50 million dong. Binance, OKX and Bybit are not licensed in Vietnam. coinglee provides price information for reference only.
Most P2P risk doesn’t come from the exchange. It comes from the person on the other side of the trade, and from mistakes made under time pressure. The good news: nearly every scam relies on one of a handful of tricks, and a few habits stop all of them. This guide lists the scams you’re most likely to meet in Vietnam, how to set up your account securely, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Who is at risk, and how
| You are… | Main risk | The rule that protects you |
|---|---|---|
| Buying USDT | Paying and not receiving; paying the wrong account; fake sites | Pay only the account shown in the order; never leave the platform |
| Selling USDT | Releasing before real money arrives; receiving scam money and getting your account frozen | Release only after you see the money in your own banking app, from the buyer’s own name |
The scams you’re most likely to meet
1. The triangle scam (sellers)
A scammer buys your USDT and, at the same time, tricks a third person, through a fake online shop, a rental deposit or a “task” job, into paying straight into your bank account. You see real money and release. When the victim reports the fraud, your account can be frozen.
Stop it: the sender’s name in your banking app must match the buyer’s verified name in the order. Different name, no release. Step by step: triangle scams and fake payment proof.
2. Fake receipts and “pending” transfers (sellers)
Edited screenshots, fake balance SMS, fake bank emails and stories like “the bank is processing, release now”. Only the balance in your own banking app counts.
3. Off-platform deals (everyone)
Someone invites you to Zalo, Telegram or Facebook for “a better price” or “no fees”. Outside the exchange order there’s no escrow and no appeal. Never send USDT or money outside an order.
4. Fake support and fake exchange staff (everyone)
Messages that claim to be from Binance, OKX or Bybit support, sometimes inside a P2P chat, asking you to “verify” an order, release USDT, or share a code. Real support never asks for your password, 2FA code or a release. Contact support only through the app.
5. Fake websites and apps (everyone)
Cloned exchange sites and apps harvest passwords and 2FA codes. Install apps only from the official store, type the address yourself, and turn on the anti-phishing code so real emails from the exchange contain a word only you know.
6. Prices that are too good (buyers)
An offer far below the market usually has a tiny limit, a brand-new account, or terms that ask you to contact the seller outside the app. The USDT price on coinglee only counts offers that accept a 5 million VND trade from advertisers with 95%+ completion and 50+ orders, so use it as a benchmark for spotting outliers.
7. Renting or selling your verified account (everyone)
“Earn money by lending your exchange account” or “sell your verified account”. The account is then used to move scam money in your name. You carry the legal risk, and your bank account is often frozen too. Never do it.
8. Overpayment and “send the difference back” (sellers)
The buyer pays more than the order and asks you to return the extra, often to a different account. The original payment may be scam money or may be reversed. Only handle refunds through the order and appeal.
Secure your account before you trade
- 2FA with an authenticator app or passkey, not SMS alone.
- Anti-phishing code in the security settings of Binance, OKX and Bybit.
- Withdrawal whitelist, so USDT can only be withdrawn to addresses you’ve saved.
- Check logged-in devices and remove ones you don’t recognise.
- A separate email for your exchange accounts, with its own strong password.
Checklist for every trade
Buying:
- The price is in line with the market; the limits fit your amount.
- You pay from your own account, to the account shown in the order, the exact amount.
- You tap “paid” only after paying, and you never cancel after paying.
Selling:
- The money is in your banking app, not just in a screenshot.
- The amount matches exactly, in one payment.
- The sender’s name matches the buyer’s verified name.
- No pressure, no strange transfer note, no moving to Zalo.
If something goes wrong
- The other side doesn’t pay or release: open an appeal inside the order and upload evidence. Support decides on evidence.
- Your bank account is frozen: see bank account frozen after P2P.
- You were scammed off-platform: report it to the exchange and to the police with all chats and transfer records. Recovery is hard, which is why staying in the order matters.
- Your account was taken over: freeze it immediately from the app or via support, change your email password, and remove unknown devices.
