What Is USDT and Should You Buy It? A Beginner's Guide for Vietnam
Legal notice: since 1 September 2026, under Decree 284/2026/ND-CP, individuals in Vietnam who trade crypto-assets other than through a provider licensed by the Ministry of Finance can be fined 30–50 million dong. Binance, OKX and Bybit are not licensed in Vietnam. coinglee provides price information for reference only.
USDT (Tether) is a “stablecoin”: a digital token designed to stay worth about 1 US dollar. It’s the most widely used stablecoin in the world, and in Vietnam it’s the main way people hold “digital dollars”, receive payments from abroad and move money in and out of crypto. This guide explains what USDT is, how it keeps its value, how to buy and store it, and the risks you should know first.

How USDT keeps its value
USDT is issued by Tether, a private company. When a large customer sends Tether 1 million dollars, Tether creates 1 million USDT. When USDT is redeemed, it’s destroyed. Tether says every USDT is backed by reserves, mostly US Treasury bills, cash and similar assets, and publishes regular reports on those reserves.
As long as people trust that 1 USDT can be swapped for 1 dollar, traders keep its price close to $1 on global exchanges. If it drifts to $0.99, traders buy it cheap and redeem it for $1, pushing it back up.
USDT vs dollars in a Vietnamese bank
| USDT | Dollars at a bank | |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Tether (a private company) | US Federal Reserve |
| Held in | A crypto wallet or exchange account | A foreign-currency account or cash |
| Bought with VND | On P2P markets, by bank transfer or e-wallet | At banks, with a valid purpose and paperwork |
| Sending abroad | Minutes, low fees | Bank transfer with paperwork, 1–3 days |
| Deposit insurance | None | Yes, under banking rules |
| Can be frozen by | Tether (addresses linked to crime), the exchange | The bank, at an authority’s request |
In Vietnam the P2P price of USDT doesn’t exactly match the Vietcombank rate; it moves with supply and demand. See why the USDT price differs from the USD rate.
What people in Vietnam use USDT for
- Holding value in dollars when worried about the dong weakening, without the paperwork of buying dollars at a bank.
- Getting paid from abroad. Freelancers, online sellers and people working with foreign clients often take USDT because it arrives in minutes and costs little.
- Sending money to family or partners abroad, where both sides use USDT.
- Trading crypto. Most trading pairs on exchanges are priced in USDT.
One token, several networks
USDT exists on several blockchains: Tron (TRC20), BNB Smart Chain (BEP20), Ethereum (ERC20), Solana, TON and others. It’s the same dollar value, but the networks don’t mix. When you send USDT, the sender and receiver must use the same network, or the money can be stuck. See which USDT network to use.
How to buy USDT with VND
The most common way is a P2P market on an exchange. You buy USDT directly from another user and pay by bank transfer or e-wallet, while the exchange holds the seller’s USDT in escrow until they confirm your payment. Step by step:

Where to keep it
| On the exchange | In your own wallet | |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds the keys | The exchange | You (seed phrase) |
| Convenience | Easy to sell on P2P | Need to send to an exchange to sell |
| Main risk | Exchange problems or account restrictions | Losing your seed phrase, phishing |
| Fees | None to hold | Network fees to send (TRX, BNB, ETH…) |
Most beginners keep small amounts on the exchange with strong security (2FA, anti-phishing code, withdrawal whitelist). If you use your own wallet, write the seed phrase on paper, never photograph it, and never type it into a website.
Risks to know before you buy
- Issuer risk. USDT is only worth a dollar if Tether really holds enough reserves. In market panics, for example May 2022, USDT briefly dipped below $1 before recovering.
- Freezing. Tether can freeze USDT held at addresses linked to crime. Don’t accept USDT from unknown sources.
- P2P risk. Scams and frozen bank accounts are the most common problems. Read how to trade P2P safely and bank account frozen after selling USDT.
- Wrong network. Sending on the wrong network can lose the funds.
- Buy–sell gap. Buying and selling straight back always costs a little, because the buy price is higher than the sell price.
- Legal risk in Vietnam. See below.
Should you buy USDT?
USDT makes sense if you need money that stays stable in dollars to send, receive international payments or trade crypto. It’s not an investment that grows. The price sits near $1, and any gain in dong comes only from changes in the dong/dollar rate and the local P2P premium. Don’t hold more than you can afford to lose, and split large amounts.
Common questions
Can USDT go to zero? It’s designed not to, and it has kept close to $1 through several crises. The risk isn’t zero: it depends on Tether’s reserves and on regulators.
USDT or USDC? USDC, from Circle, is the other big dollar stablecoin. In Vietnam’s P2P markets USDT has far more offers and better prices, so most people use USDT.

Vietnam’s rules in 2026
Since 1 January 2026, the Law on Digital Technology Industry brings digital assets into Vietnam’s legal framework. Resolution 05/2025/NQ-CP runs a five-year pilot in which only providers licensed by the Ministry of Finance may offer crypto-asset services. From 1 July 2026, individuals pay 0.1% personal income tax on the value of each transfer made through a licensed provider (Circular 32/2026/TT-BTC). Since 1 September 2026, under Decree 284/2026/ND-CP, individuals who trade other than through a licensed provider can be fined 30–50 million dong. As of October 2026 no exchange has a full licence yet, and Binance, OKX and Bybit are not licensed in Vietnam. Details: Vietnam crypto regulation 2026.
